Question

What are the requirements for getting married in Australia?

To be legally married in Australia, you must:

  • not be married to someone else

  • not be marrying a parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, brother or sister

  • be at least 18 years old, unless a court has approved a marriage where one party is aged between 16 and 18 years old

  • understand what marriage means and freely consent to becoming legally married.

  • use specific words during the ceremony

  • give written notice of your intention to marry to your Authorised Marriage Celebrant, within the required time frame

Question

What paperwork do we need to complete?

A completed Notice of Intended Marriage form must be given to your Celebrant at least one month before the wedding. You can give it to your Celebrant up to 18 months beforehand.

Your Celebrant can help you complete the form. The notice may be completed and witnessed outside Australia if required.

Talk to your Celebrant if there is less than one month before your wedding. A prescribed authority may approve a shorter notice time in some limited circumstances.

You will need to give your Celebrant evidence of date and place of birth, identity and the end of any previous marriages for each party.

If  you intend to marry overseas, please note that marriage Celebrants authorised in Australia can only perform legal marriages within Australia.

Question

What if  I live too far away for the Celebrant to sign my NOIM?

The notice must be signed by each of the parties in the presence of, and witnessed by an authorised Celebrant or a Commissioner for Declarations under the Statutory Declarations Act 1959, a Justice of the Peace, a Barrister, Solicitor, a legally qualified Medical Practitioner or a member of the Police Force. Question

What if  I was born overseas and the required documents are not in English?

The documents are required to be translated by an accredited translator with NAATI.

The translator will need to produce a statutory declaration proving their qualifications to read and speak the chosen language. This will be lodged with all other official documentation after the

wedding.

Question

What forms are signed on the Wedding day?

Three forms are signed on the day. The marriage participants and  the two witnesses (both 18 years or over) and the Celebrant sign the Presentation Certificate, as well as the Celebrants

Marriage Register and the 2nd Marriage Certificate for your marriage registration at the Birth, Deaths and Marriages.

Question

Denise          June 2018

What a wonderful friendly easy-going lady. Debra was the celebrant we asked to hold the naming day for our baby girl. From our first contact right through to afterwards she was prompt, helpful, caring, genuine, and not only professional but added extra touches to make the day special and truly memorable. It was truly the best day! She made it so easy to be a part of and made me feel so relaxed even though Layla was a bit unsettled & hungry during the ceremony. Debra paused as we needed & nothing felt forced or awkward. Thank you so much Debra for helping us to welcome our baby girl into the world with your gorgeous words & loving demeanor. We have some precious memories to treasure for many years to come...

She blended the Irish and Kenyan culture so beautifully and made the ceremony amazing. Not only is Deb ridiculously organised , she is caring, genuine and a beautiful soul. Her presence before and during the wedding made all the difference.we would highly recommend her for your special day. Next time we see you Deb will be for the naming of the baby. Thank you so much

Michael & Jemutai xxx     October 2018

Highly recommend Debra for any special occasion! When first contacted her, I received all the information I needed and straight away felt that our special day would be in great hands. Debra created and delivered a beautiful Naming Ceremony for our daughter. She supported us in adding our own personal touches and recommended ideas when i was unable to find what i needed. Thank you so much again for all your time and effort - it is greatly appreciated and will be remembered always with the beautiful keepsakes we have. Xx   January 2019

Debra recently officiated our wedding ceremony, and I would like to give her the most glowing recommendation possible. Debra was absolutely amazing at every stage. She actually stepped in as our original celebrant was sick and unable to officiate, and so at relatively short notice, Debra was able to pull everything together so smoothly in a way that it felt like she'd been part of the process the whole time. My husband and I both felt like we were in such good hands and Debra is lovely, personable, friendly, approachable and explained every step of the process to us so we never felt lost or confused along the way. We are so stoked Debra could be part of our special day and she gave us an amazing ceremony we will never forget.

Thanks heaps Debra! - Holden & Raphael    April 2019

Debra was so professional and easy to deal with. She came over and explained everything and made it all really simple for us, was very supportive and reassuring in what can be a stressful life event! She was very warm and generous and did a wonderful job on the day to make it all pull together beautifully for us. I would highly recommend Debra for her professional approach and kindness and empathy. She had a great sense of humour as well which helped to lighten things! Thankyou so much for sharing our wedding day with us and we wish you all the best. - Luci & Regan Sept 2020

Upon a chance meeting in the Swan Valley, we are so grateful we've picked Debra Chittleborough to be our Marriage Celebrant. She is a kind, thoughtful, friendly and a true professional. What I really loved about Debra's work is that she spent the extra time and effort to make our ceremony unique and personal to us. The injection of our stories in between the 'official stuff' and the personal blessing at the end was simply perfect. We were glad she was there to guide us every step of the way, I would highly recommend Debra to all my friends and family who are seeking to tie the knot. Thanks Debra! Linda & Jarrad Sept 2020

It has been one of the best decisions we made in our wedding to get Debra as our Wedding Celebrant. Our intimate wedding was made spectacular and extremely organized by Debra. She handled the ceremony professionally and the whole moment was emotional and joyous. She is easy to communicate with, and our meetings before the wedding were organized, and all the paperwork was neatly done. The flow of the ceremony was handled really amazing, and she has a wonderful sweet modulated voice when officiating. I cannot express how thankful we are to Debra for giving us a lovely wedding to remember. Lorraine April 2023

We are so grateful for the beautiful memories you helped create for us and our loved ones. Your role in our wedding is one that we will cherish forever. Thank you for being an integral part of our journey and for making our day unforgettable.

Wishing you continued success in your endeavours and hoping our paths cross again. C &K November 2023

Unlike weddings, funerals mostly occur without much planning time. Deb gently walked us through and guided us with so much love, care and kindness in such a short space of time. Being on one of life’s most difficult journeys, that support meant the world to us. When Deb learned of Dads hobbies and interest’s she delved deep to find the most amazing poem and reading for the service, going the extra mile to put detail into everything she did. Thank you from all of us Deb. Jenni November 2023
